A Prophetic Witness offers the opportunity to more deeply understand Adventist history and theology in order to see that peace and justice are central to both. With this prophetic mindset, we are better positioned to advocate wisely, addressing social and religious issues facing our world today.

Glen Graham, Lisa Clark Diller, and Jeff Gang edited this collection of essays, where “Adventist scholars explore how this heritage and the church’s distinctive beliefs can inform faithful responses to contemporary challenges” (from the back cover). “Drawing on Scripture, history, and theology, they examine topics such as peacemaking, inequality, human rights, citizenship, pluralism, and artificial intelligence through the lens of the Sabbath, the three angels’ messages, and Adventist hope.”

Chapters include:

  • Introduction: The Legacy of the Early Adventist Church (Glen M Graham)

  • Adventism’s Peacemaking Heritage (Douglas Morgan)

  • Antislavery, Social Justice, and the Three Angels’ Messages (Kevin M Burton)

  • Sabbath Solidarity as an Alternative to Meritocracy (Yi-Shen Ma)

  • The Eternal Sabbath (Niq Ruud)

  • Sabbath as a Jewish Practice of Human Rights and Equality (Nathan Brown)

  • Unveiling the Violence of Victim-making (Daniel Muller)

  • Turning the Other Cheek (Zdravko Plantak)

  • Nation-states vs Neighbors (Lisa Clark Diller)

  • Liberty of Conscience and the Christian Activist (Karen Scott and Janice Staab)

  • Human Rights in the Age of Artificial Intelligence (Jeffrey A Gang and Yamiko J Chanza)

Douglas Morgan, project contributor, Adventist historian, and APF co-founder, has written about the book on his Substack:

Morgan’s concluding teaser to his Sept. 9 post is most promising: “I further explore this concern [about Christian nationalism] in the new Afterword to the second edition of my book Adventism and the American Republic, forthcoming in October….”
